Our Review:

Womanline.com is a snazzy, sophisticated-looking dating site for savvy urban single lesbians. It has a broad range, appealing to those looking to hang out and flirt online, find someone to get serious about or those looking for casual encounters.

When you sign up you're asked to specify whether you're looking to meet others to date, to find a relationship or to hookup. Whilst this can be useful in terms of distinguishing between what members  are broadly looking for, it's also limiting if you're not solely interested in just one of these options. That said, it doesn't necessarily confine you to one type of relationship. You have to go ahead and choose before you can sign up. Joining is free and you just need to possess a valid email address to register. At the time of this review there were just short of 100 members online. The format of the site is such that there are 3 drop-down menus, based upon whether you're searching for dates, a relationship or hookups. This means that you can only select one of these categories. Coupled with the fact that you only get notified of online members near you, it's not possible to calculate the total number of members online. Profiles are quite detailed and feature tabs that give basic information, fast facts, a self written 'in my own words' section and a picture gallery. You'll find profiles with video intros too. There's also a backstage feature where private photos can be hidden. You can ask a member to let you backstage to view their private pics, or a member might send you a message with a 'backstage pass', inviting you to view their private pics. The profiles pages are well set-out and you can communicate easily via the profiles.

In terms of search options, on the homepage you can access a quick search that lets you specify what you're after (dating/relationship/intimate), age range and distance (miles). You can filter search results by yielding only new members, members online now, profiles with photos or profiles with videos. If this isn't quite specific enough, the advanced search lets you add the criteria ethnicity, height, body type, smoking/drinking habits, languages spoken, online activity, zodiac sign and much more. The great thing here is that you can filter out potentially inactive profiles by specifiying the last login date. You can also filter search results in the same way as the quick search. To save having to enter all the criteria again, it's possible to save your search too. In addition to a nickname search, there are a few preconfigured search options that you select from a drop-down menu, including 'local members', 'online members', 'new members' and more. To connect with other members there's an internal email messaging system you can use to exchange private emails with other members. You can also initiate contact by sending 'smiles', which are automatic messages generated to break the ice and show that you like somebody. You can also request to chat with another member in real time using the instant messenger (IM) system. You can access all of these features by simply clicking on the appropriate icon to the right of the photo on a member's profile. You can also connect by adding your favorite profiles to your hotlist.

Basic membership is completely free and you receive access to most membership features (though some are restricted). Free members get to create a profile, search and browse other profiles, upload up to 30 photos, send smiles and reply to emails and IM for free. Upgraded members get all this plus unlimited email and IM and view tracklists (who's visited your profile). With reference to profile enhancements, you can subscribe to get your profile highlighted in search results, be listed as a featured member on the homepage or connect using a mobile device (which will enhance your connectivity rather than your profile itself). Given that membership is free and the monthly fee for these enhancements is minimal, if you want to stand out why not try the 'Get Noticed' profile where you can get the first two enhancements for $4.99 instead of paying $2.99 each? Womanline.com is a great dating site with some original features and a layout that is intuitive and easy to navigate. Despite the distinct lack of activity on the site it's one of the best sites outside our Top 10.
